LJHCA Warns About Dangers of Self-Troubleshooting

With the growing number of failed self-troubleshooting attempts in relation to the home HVAC system, the La Jolla HVAC Contractors Association called on homeowners to avoid addressing their own HVAC repair needs.

In a statement posted in the LJHCA’s official website, association president Phil Thompson mentioned that they have been repairing DIY Troubleshooting gone wrong in some homes who have carried out self-troubleshooting of repairs, and worst, installed HVAC systems by themselves. “It has not done them any good, they had to pay more, and they even had to risk safety as well as their entire HVAC system. The repairs definitely were costly, and some had not been too fortunate because some DIY fails have resulted to the need for complete HVAC replacement which is very costly especially if their system is not due for replacement,” warns Thompson.

The LJHCA says apart from expensive repairs or sudden need for system replacement, self-troubleshooting can also be very dangerous. “They could injure themselves, they could be exposed to dangerous chemicals and noxious gases, and so will the whole household. They could end up getting electric shocked, they could create a fire hazard at home. These are all complete possibilities, and these had happened to others,” Thompson cautions homeowners.

Moreover, the LJHCA says, home repairs will definitely not be a long term solution. “Sooner or later, they will need help again. This is because most likely the ‘successful’ repair that they have carried out will just be short-lived. The system will again give up, and the trouble there is it could be even more troublesome next time,” Thompson added. California Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Association

Third Party Service Ratings website Angie’s List also mentioned why HVAC issues is included in the list of DIY Repairs that a homeowner should never undertake. In their write-up on the topic they underscored how dangerous it can get to repair HVAC systems.

“What you don’t know will hurt you. HVAC units are highly technical and use a large amount of voltage electricity. It’s best to stay away from these levels of electricity if you don’t know what you’re doing. Heating and cooling appliances also use chemicals and refrigerants most of us are unfamiliar with. Handling these chemicals can be deadly if the proper precautions aren’t followed. Proper training and safety gear is essential to make sure no one is injured by or exposed to deadly chemicals used in these systems. Handling these chemicals also requires certification.”

The LJHCA says every penny spent for expert and licensed HVAC repair service will always be worth it.
